PRCA-B Presents – Dolly Parton: Crisis Communication CEO
“Working 9 to 5,” “Jolene,” “Here You Come Again.” Although best known for her beautiful singing and songwriting, Dolly Parton is known as friend and neighbor in and around Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Never has this been more evident than during the 2016 wildfires. At PRCA-Birmingham’s October meeting, Dr. Lance Kinney, associate professor of Advertising & Public Relations at the University of Alabama, will discuss Dolly’s high-profile response to the Gatlinburg fires. Dr. Kinney will compare three different crisis response strategies and demonstrate how the celebrity embodied the role of “regional CEO” following the fires. This presentation was also recently delivered at the International Country Music Conference in Nashville.

Dr. Kinney began his education with a BA (1984) in communication from Auburn University. Following his first ad agency account executive job, he earned an MA in advertising from the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia (1987). After stints as a communications coordinator with a client firm and account executive with a J. Walter Thompson subsidiary, Dr. Kinney earned a doctorate in mass communication theory and research from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida (1995).
Dr. Kinney pursues an extensive program of integrated marketing communication strategy research, including ad response as a function of program involvement, film product placement, event sponsorship and mass media effects. Dr. Kinney’s research has appeared in Journal of Sport Marketing, Psychology and Marketing, Journal of Promotion Management, International Journal of Sports Marketing and Sponsorship, International Journal of Integrated Marketing Communication, numerous conference proceedings and a number of book chapters. Dr. Kinney has addressed many national and international public relations, advertising and marketing organizations, including the American Academy of Advertising, the American Marketing Association, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, National Communication Association, North American Society for Sports Marketing and Management, the International Country Music Conference and the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games. Dr. Kinney is also on in-demand speaker on the professional circuit, addressing professional groups on research techniques, data analysis, and sponsorship strategies, along with other integrated marketing communication topics.
Dr. Kinney has been teaching media planning, strategy and research since 1991. Dr. Kinney currently teaches, researches and consults as a tenured associate professor of advertising and public relations at the University of Alabama.
